Oddfellows2 (1)

This just might be one of my  favorite spots in Seattle. Yep, I just might have  become a regular. That is my arm being twisted.

The first time that I stopped by was to have a drink while waiting for a friend during the Capitol Hill Block Party. I thought it would be a madhouse but I was able to sidle right up the bar and it was not long before I had a most refreshing Negroni in front of me. The bartender and hostess were fantastically nice and I just liked the vibe of the spot. The space is one big room with the kitchen and bar and all of it out in the open. Very inviting. Read more

Oliver’s Twist

I  have been to Oliver’s Twist probably twenty times and it is stellar every… single…time. They have a chalkboard that lists the favorite drinks of everyone that works there. In the name of research, I think I have tried every single one with the Red Hook, Scofflaw and Duff & Blathers being my very favorites. If you are lucky, Robert will be there – he is one of the best bartenders in Seattle, in my very humble (and experienced) opinion.

Agrodolce

Agrodolce1Agrodolce2Maria Hines just never lets me down. My friend and I were finally able to make it to Agrodolce to check it out and we were oh so glad that we did.

Our cocktails for the evening (all of them!) were delicious. Among them, my Pink Elephant was sparkly deliciousness and my friend’s Salty Sicilian had him feeling like James Bond. Read more

cicchettiI think I just found my nomination for most beautiful staff at a restaurant in Seattle. Not that looks matter, of course, at a food establishment, but it didn’t hurt this girl’s dining experience. Read more

Hunger

Thank you, Hunger, for making me a believer in second chances! My friend and I came in one night and had horrible service from a bartender and, the next day, both Yelped about it, saying we would never, ever go back. Read more

Hazlewood

Posted on25 November 2012 | 0 comments

Hazlewood was totally not what I expected. At all. I was thinking pretentious, tiny, out-of-my-element space where I wouldn’t belong but it wasn’t really that way at all. My friend and I started to go upstairs but it was empty except for only one couple and, well, I didn’t want to harsh their alone time.  Read more

Cafe Presse

Get the Croque Madam and get a carafe of wine. And the frites with mayo. Do it? You still only spent about $20 but you got to hang out at one of the coolest spots in Seattle and eat some of the best food you can get. I am drooling just thinking about it. Read more

Hooverville Bar

Posted on14 November 2012 | 0 comments

I went into Hooverville with diminished expectations because a) it is in the not-so-nice SODO area and it is b) the nearest bar by far to Showbox SODO. A place with such proximity to a music venue can sometimes just coast along being mediocre and not really try to hard.
This is not the case with Hooverville. Read more

Canon

canon- whiskey and bitters emporium

The first time I went to Canon it was opening week so it was crazy crowded. I at first couldn’t even get in but the guy at the door, who turned out to be Jamie Bourdeau, was feeling generous and let me squeeze in. Cool point #1.  I had liked Licorous so much that I was nervous the new tenant wouldn’t be up to par but I had no need to worry my pretty little head. Read more

Mistral Kitchen

Posted on11 November 2012 | 0 comments

This restaurant is not easy to find but, man, oh, man, am I glad I located it. A lovely girl in my book club who has excellent taste in food and cocktails told me I had to try Mistral. Allegedly some of the best bartenders in the city could be found there. Sold and sold. Read more

Dahlia Lounge

Oh, Tom Douglas, I do love you. Your restaurants just don’t disappoint. I went to Dahlia on a blustery, awful rainy Seattle day to take advantage of the 3 for $30 promotion. Such a great deal. The warm, red interior was a refuge from the storm. Read more

The Whale Wins

This restaurant just opened this month and it is run by Renee Erickson, she of Walrus & Carpenter and Boat Street Cafe. I found myself on a Friday hitting Whale for a couple of cocktails and then heading to Boat Street for dinner. It was a Renee kind of evening. Read more

Maximilien

Posted on5 November 2012 | 0 comments

After two awful trips in a week, Maximilien is officially crossed off my list. Yes, they have a patio and, yes, the happy hour bites are only $2.95. If that is enough to make you happy then you will be just fine here. I, however, am partial to… Read more

Tavolata

I have walked by Tavolata a million times but somehow had just never made it in. I knew it was an Ethan Stowell creation and, having just loved Staple & Fancy and How to Cook A Wolf, I needed to cross this baby off my list. Read more

Smith

I thought I might not be cool enough for Smith but, even if I am drunk on self-delusion, I felt totally at home there and have that way on every single visit.

The interior – very dark, very intimate but it is a big, big space. For my first visit, we sat at the bar and had the drink special of the night. It was fantastic and we got the meat plate to nibble. Oh – YES. It, also, was fantastic. And huge. My date and I were easily able to share and not leave hungry. The meat was plentiful and good quality. On subsequent visits I have tried a number of dishes (ohhhh, the macaroni and cheese) and a number of cocktails (very fond of the ‘That’s What’s Up) and been happy happy with every one.

Service – excellent. The bartenders and servers have always been friendly, efficient (even though it was a busy Friday night) and we felt like we were the only people there. Well, me and 100 of my hip, beautiful, yet extremely cool friends.

Good date spot? Definitely. There are lots of seating options – booths, open tables, the bar – and it is a pretty big place. It can get pretty crowded so keep that in mind, especially if you are meeting here for a first date. But I have been here on a number of dates, first and otherwise, and always had good luck. I find the atmosphere to be very romance-inducing.
